Like that lizard in the insurance ads on television, MRServer has always
been green. And not just that way - MRServer has always believed in
maintaining a small environmental footprint. No racks of servers sucking
down fossil fuel and blowing out hot air, not around here.
And like almost everyone, MRServer has been affected by the current economic
climate and the probability of skyrocketing energy costs. Being of the
philosophy perhaps best summed up as "If life gives you lemons make
lemonade" (though personally MRServer doesn't particularly like lemonade, he
understands that you can still sell it in a little stand out by the road)
(and he likes limes better anyway, being green and all), MRServer is taking
advantage of this opportunity to get better.
Existing servers are being replaced with up-to-date technology that does
more (a
lot more) computing while using significantly less power.
Virtualization software is allowing one computer to do the work formerly
done by three... or more... and with some of the money saved on power
consumption, MrServer has invested in projects through
TerraPass to offset the
effects of the carbon dioxide created in generating the power those
servers still need.
What this means is that you, through your website, will use less power and
generate less carbon dioxide than ever before, and in the process make a
positive contribution to help reverse global warming. I don't know how you
feel about that, but MrServer thinks it's a good thing!
